About Us
Bees and wasps aren’t always welcome.
They can turn a pleasant space into a hazard.
Around cafés, pools, patios, and events, they bring safety risks that drive people and customers away and disrupt the experience. According to the CDC, an average of 72 Americans die each year from bee, wasp, or hornet stings.
The old way doesn’t work!
Businesses have been fighting bees and wasps the same way for decades.
Broad-spectrum pesticides and extermination methods are blunt, often ineffective, and kill indiscriminately. They do not stop bees and wasps from coming back, and they put pollinators and the environment at risk.
We have a better way forward!
We guide them somewhere better.
Aculeo guides bees and wasps away from people using scent cues, visual markers, and behavior-based strategies. Â By disrupting the signals they rely on, we prevent them from returning.
We create science-backed solutions that work.
So how do we do it?
We’ve created products that work together to keep bees and wasps away from busy spaces, each built on science, field-tested, and designed to protect people and pollinators.
This is where it all began.
From a small bee shop to a legacy of innovation
Aculeo’s story began over 50 years ago in a small shop called Southwest Bee Supply, founded in the 1970s by retired Air Force Captain Carter Thoenes. What started as a family-run bee supply business grew into a multigenerational pursuit of understanding bee behavior. Carter’s son, Steve, carried the legacy forward by raising bees, studying their biology, and earning multiple degrees including a Ph.D. in entomology from the University of Arizona.
Turning passion into expertise.
Decades of research and innovation
In the decades that followed, Steve founded BeeMaster Inc., one of the longest-standing and most respected bee specialist companies in the Southwestern United States. Drawing on academic research conducted at the USDA, University of Arizona, Northern Arizona University, and Oklahoma State, his team developed innovative tools and techniques for a wide range of bee-related challenges. These efforts built the foundation for Aculeo’s science-driven approach.
